The 2006 EUROCITIES Conference and AGM, ‘Knowledge Cities: Villes du Futur’, will provide a platform to discuss how cities can benefit from the opportunities presented by the knowledge economy, as well as finding solutions to the challenges it creates. We can examine what it means to be a knowledge city and explore some of the key issues we face around competitiveness, sustainability and social inclusion.
The impact of globalisation is something which is being felt increasingly by all of our citizens. It is now several years since the European Union launched the Lisbon and Gothenburg Strategies – which aim to address Europe’s competitiveness in this changing world. Indeed, as EU Member States are commencing the implementation of their Lisbon National Reform Programmes, the creation of the most competitive and dynamic knowledge-based economy remains high on the political agenda – and not least for Europe’s cities.
I do hope that you will be able to join us for this conference, which I believe will provide a unique and exciting forum for us to discuss the knowledge economy at the local level.
